Turtle, Humpty Dumpty, and Jack and Jill
Announce Winners of 13th Annual U.S. Kids Cover Contest

Indianapolis (April 10, 2013) — Today, award-winning children's magazines Turtle, Humpty Dumpty, and Jack and Jill announced the winners of the 13th Annual Cover Contest. Designed to stimulate creativity and promote art programs in schools across the country, the contest encouraged children ages 3-12 to submit entries fitting with the theme, "My Best Day Ever."

First-, second-, and third-place prizes were awarded for each of the three magazines. First-place winners will be featured on the covers of the May/June 2013 issues of the respective magazines as well as on the magazines' website, uskidsmags.com. Second- and third-place winners will be featured in the pages of the magazines and online. In addition, all winners will receive cash prizes for their schools' art programs: $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place.

The 13th Annual U.S. Kids Cover Contest winners are:

    Turtle, ages 3-5
  • 1st Place, Linda Wang, 4, Upton, MA — "Feeding animals on my fourth birthday"
  • 2nd Place, Tyler Mitchener, 4, Jonesboro, AR — "Seeing the giant fish and sharks in the ocean"
  • 3rd Place, Asher Houkaas, 4, Edmonds, WA — "To go into outer space and see planets"
    Humpty Dumpty, ages 5-7
  • 1st Place, Cozette Weng, 7, Northborough, MA — "Great fun on water slides, watching sharks swimming around!"
  • 2nd Place, Maya Jandzinski, 7, Sandy Hook, VA — "Snorkling in Aruba"
  • 3rd Place, Elizabeth Butler, 5, Vanceburg, KY — "Birthday wish"
    Jack and Jill, ages 7-12
  • 1st Place, Armen Duran, 12, Rosemead, CA — "Having fun with my family. We love the beach. We go to do kayaking and go swimming"
  • 2nd Place, Rhea Advani, 11, Fremont, CA — "Scuba diving in Hawaii"
  • 3rd Place, Jaise Bivens, 8, Vanceburg, KY — "Pirate treasure"

"This year proved to be a very tough choice, as the skills and imagination of our young readers is unprecedented," CEO Joan SerVaas said. "Turtl, Humpty Dumpty, and Jack and Jill recognize the importance of art education. We hope our contest helps to keep art programs in schools and provides an opportunity for children across the country to be creative."

The winners were selected by a panel of judges that included contributing illustrators to Turtl, Humpty Dumpty, and Jack and Jill, plus three celebrity judges: Jim Davis, cartoonist and creator of Garfield; Shane Sowell, artist for King of the Hill, The Simpsons, and Piggy Nation; and Joyce Raimondo, author of seven children's art books, including The Museum of Modern Art's popular Art Safari series.

The cover contest has helped keep art in children’s lives by awarding more than $34,000 to school art programs in the past 12 years.
