1st Place

Congratulations to Julia W., 8, this year’s Cover Contest winner! Julia impressed the judges with her entry of a fishbowl in space. She says, “The fishbowl represents the ocean. Humans are polluting the ocean, and if we’re not careful, we will pollute the entire universe.” Her drawing is her reminder to the world to be careful not to litter and to recycle as much as possible. So, what inspired her? “The wrong choices humans have made with litter,” she tells us. At home, Julia’s family does their part by recycling cans, bottles, and paper. Last year her school had a competition to see which class could bring in the most recyclables.

Julia loves to draw animals and plants. She likes going to art class at school, but says that her favorite subject is natural history. When Julia is not creating artwork to save the planet, she likes to play outside, play the violin (she’s been playing for almost five years), and read.

2nd Place

Ten-year-old Armen’s Cover Contest entry won second place! “My picture is about telling everyone to recycle so we have clean air and a nice place to live,” he tells us. Armen does his part at home by recycling. His family also saves water they use to rinse dishes to water their plants.

Armen loves to draw fun things like cartoons. His parents decorate their house with his drawings, changing them to fit the seasons and special occasions. “I like to draw because I can express myself,” Armen says.

At school, his favorite subject is English. At home, when he’s not drawing, he plays with his dog or his action figures, especially the superheroes, and Godzilla. He also participates in track and field.

3rd Place

Congratulations to Mira, 8, our thirdplace winner! In Mira’s entry, a bird is saving the earth by watering a flower with a watering can. Mira says she does the same thing as the bird to help the planet. “I like to draw a lot,” says Mira.

“I like to draw other animals, too, besides birds. My favorite animals are dolphins and birds.”

Mira likes to spend most of her time drawing. After school she takes art and ballet classes. In school, her favorite subject is science because she gets to study animals.
