The Race

By Ashley Schoenherr

Meet Ashley, this month’s “Pen in Hand” author. Ashley is in 8th grade and wrote this poem for her language arts class. She chose to write about running because it is something she loves to do, and because she likes to stay active outside.

The Race

The crowd is hushed.
The runners’ feet step to the starting line.
Suspense builds …
BANG! The gun fires.
A mob of runners dash forward;
The crowd cheers wildly.
Runners sprint,
Beating record time
To the finish line!
