Parents: This exercise in volume measurement is interactive, educational, and fun. It can be done at the kitchen table or on a table outdoors as long as the wind is not blowing.
You Will Need:
Permanent marker
5 to 10 plastic cups
Medium-sized bowl
of uncooked rice
Measuring spoons
What to Do:
Use the marker to draw a big dot on one of the
plastic cups. On the second cup, draw TWO
dots. On the third cup draw THREE dots, and so on,
until you have prepared 5 to 10 cups. 0
Mix up the order of the cups.
Pick a cup and count the number of dots
on the outside. Count out the same number of tablespoons (or teaspoons) of rice and place them in the cup. 0
Pick another cup and follow step 3. Continue until you have measured rice into all of the cups.
Variations:
Measure different ingredients, such as salt, dry
cornmeal, or water. (Tint water with food coloring for fun!)
