A Valentine’s Card

Ask an adult to help you gather materials to make your own Valentine's Day cards for family members or special friends. Each card has a gift inside that can be serious or silly.

You Will Need:

  • Red and white construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Safety scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Crayons or colored pens
  • Glitter glue
  • Heart stickers,
    optional
  • Clear tape
  • Envelope

What You Do:

  1. Fold a sheet of red paper in half; then fold it in half again. This will be your card.
  2. Use the pencil and ruler to
draw a 2½-by-2½-inch heart and a 3-by-3-inch heart on white paper. Cut them out.
  3. Glue the large white heart to the front of the card and let dry. (Be sure that the glue goes all the way to the edges.) Use a black crayon or pen to make a squiggly design around the heart.
  4. Use the pencil to draw a simple picture (such as a star, flower, or a smaller heart) on the white heart. Then use crayons or colored pens to fill it in with dots or blocks of color (see page 11). Use glitter glue and stickers to decorate the front of your card and let dry.
  5. On the small heart, write
    your gift. You might write
    “Good for  One Hug,” “Good
for a Back Rub,”  or “Good for One Song.”
  6. Cut a ¾-by-3-inch piece of white paper. Fold this piece three times like a fan to make a paper “spring.”
  7. Open the card. Use tape to attach one end of the paper spring to the back of the gift heart. Attach the other end of the spring to the right side of the card. (The gift heart should spring forward when the card is opened.) Add tiny heart stickers to the inside of the card.
  8. On the left side of the card, write “Happy Valentine’s Day” and your name. Close the card carefully, and make sure the paper spring is folded. Write the person’s name on the envelope and place your card inside.

Take a Picture!
