Make Finger Puppets

Gather your family to make these animal finger puppets. An adult must assemble the puppets using hot glue. Then you can use them to perform “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” For even more puppet fun, click here for instructions to make Old MacDonald’s Barn!

You Will Need:

  • Hot glue gun (for adult use only)
  • Colored chenille stems
  • 1-inch and mini pom-poms in assorted colors
  • Wire cutters (for adult use only)
  • Small googly eyes
  • Fine-point black marker

(Steps 1-3 show how all puppet bodies are assembled.)

Ask Your Adult Helper to:

  1. Heat the hot glue gun.
  2. Wrap a chenille stem
around their finger. The top end should taper into a small circle. This is the puppet body.
  3. Use a drop of hot glue to attach a 1-inch pom-pom head to the tapered end of the body. Be careful of the hot glue!
  4. Pig: Attach a pink head to a pink body. For ears, use the wire cutters to cut two ¾-inch pieces from another pink stem and bend them in half. Apply a dab of hot glue to the ends and attach them to either side of the head. Use hot glue to attach a pink mini pom-pom nose to the middle of the face. Glue two googly eyes above the nose. Use the marker to make two dots in the middle of the pig’s nose.
  5. Duck: Attach a yellow head to a yellow body. To make a bill, cut a ½-inch piece from an orange stem and bend it in half. Apply hot glue to the ends and attach it to the middle of the face. Glue two googly eyes above the bill. For wings, cut a 5-inch yellow stem and bend the ends into loops as shown. To attach, slip the wings into the back of the body between the coils.
  6. Make as many animal puppets as you like using
this formula. (Make one for each member of your family!)
  7. Place the puppets on your two front fingers. Now sing the “Old MacDonald” song with your family. When you come to the “with a ‘quack-quack’ here” part, move your duck puppet and make it “quack-quack.” When it’s time for the pig to “oink-oink,” wiggle your finger and make your pig “oink!”

Old MacDonald Had a Farm
(Sing)

Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a duck. E-I-E-I-O.
With a “quack-quack” here and a “quack-quack” there,
Here a “quack!” There a “quack!”
Everywhere a “quack-quack!”
Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.

Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a pig. E-I-E-I-O.
With an “oink-oink” here and an “oink-oink” there,
Here an “oink!” There an “oink!”
Everywhere an “oink-oink!”
A “quack-quack” here and a “quack-quack” there,
Here a “quack!” There a “quack!”
Everywhere a “quack-quack!”
Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.

(Add as many animals as you have puppets.)
