In areas that have snowy winters, some birds fly south while others brave the cold. These “winter birds” have a hard time finding food. But you can help. Ask an adult to assist you
in making this friendly feeder.
What You Need:
• Half-gallon milk carton,
washed and dried
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Craft knife (for adult)
• Hole punch
• Twine
• Safety scissors
• Food: birdseed, sunflower seeds, cracked corn, nuts, berries, sliced apples, bananas, oranges
What You Do:
1. On each side of the milk carton, measure 1½ inches from the bottom and draw a line.
2. Ask your adult helper to cut
a tall window in all four sides.
(Do not cut below the line.)
3. Have your helper punch a hole in the top. Thread one end of twine through the hole and make a knot. Tie the other end of twine to a tree limb.
4. Fill the bottom of the feeder with food. Check your feeder every day to make sure it is filled. Your feathered friends will be counting on you.
