Ready, Set, Create
Oinking Herbs
By Jan Van Pelt
Art by Patti Goodnow
Herbs smell wonderful and give your food a good flavor. Growing them is easy. Ask an adult to help you start your own “oinking” herb garden!

What You Need:

• 3 large eggs
• Small bowl
• Egg carton
• Waterproof markers
• Potting soil
• Seeds, such as tarragon, parsley, and chives

What You Do:

1. Have an adult remove a quarter-sized hole from the top of each egg by tapping it with a spoon. Empty the insides into the bowl and save. Rinse the eggshells
and let dry.

2. Use the markers to draw funny pig faces on the outside of the shells.

3. Fill your piggies with potting soil and sprinkle different seeds in each one. Set them in the egg carton and label it with your marker. Gently water them.

4. Place your piggies in a sunny spot and keep the soil moist. When they are ready for haircuts, use the herbs in your favorite foods.

Decorate your piggies anyway you like!

Take a Picture!
Before you cut your oinking herbs, have someone take a clear photo of you holding them.

Send it in, along with your name, age, and address, and you might see it in an upcoming issue.
