Fido's Favorite Treats
Photos by Jamie Mahoney

Your furry, tail-wagging friends need treats this time of year, too. Make these biscuits for your dog. He'll bark for joy!

You will need:

  • 1 cup uncooked oatmeal

  • 1/3 cup butter

  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm, low-sodium chicken broth

  • 3/4 cup powdered milk

  • 3/4 cup oatmeal

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 3 cups whole-wheat flour

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to over 325° F.

  2. Put oatmeal and butter in a bowl. Pour lukewarm chicken broth over everything and let state five minutes.

  3. Stir in powdered milk, cornmeal, and egg.

  4. Mix in four, ½ cup at a time. Knead three to four minutes, adding more flour if necessary to make a very stiff dough.

  5. Roll dough until ½-inch thick. Cut into bone shapes and place on a greased baking sheet.

  6. Bake for about 50 minutes. Allow to cool and dry out until hard.

Remember, foods that are good for people aren't always good for dogs. Don't feed your dog cooked bones, pork, fatty meats, chocolate, caffeine, onions, salt, soy, processed sugar, nuts, or corn. Fresh, whole foods like fruits and veggies, uncooked beef on or off the bone, poultry without the skin, and seafood are OK and can even keep your dog healthier.

Tennis Ball Tug

Make this quick and easy tug toy for your pup.

You will need:

  • A tennis ball

  • Scissors

  • 3 2-foot long strips of jeans fabric

  • 2 5-inch long strips of jeans fabric

Directions

  1. Cut a small hole in both ends of the long strips of fabric. Cut a hole into the ball. Cut another hole on the other side of the ball.

  2. Put a short strip of fabric through the holes on one end of the longer strips, and tie it. Braid the jeans into a rope.

  3. Five inches from the end of the rope, put the ball onto a strip. Braid until you reach the end of the rope.

  4. Put the other short fabric piece through holes on the bottom of the rope. Tie it.
