Watermelon Garden
Art by Christopher Wurth
Special thanks to the National Watermelon Board

July is National Watermelon and Blueberry Month! Let's celebrate! Ask an adult to help you make this pretty, yummy garden for for your next family project.

You Will Need:

  • Chef's knife (for adult use)

  • Round, seedless watermelon, washed

  • Melon baller

  • Medium-sized bowl

  • Flower-shaped cookie cutters

  • 10-15 wooden skewers

  • 1 cup of fresh blueberries, rinsed

What To Do:

Wash your hands. Have an adult cut 1/4-inch off the bottom of the watermelon (to make it sit level), and then cut off the top half and set it aside. Use the melon baller to scoop watermelon balls out of the bottom half, or "flower bed." Place the balls in the bowl.

Have your adult helper cut the top half of the melon into 1/2-inch slices. Use the cookie cutters to cut out flower shapes. Carefully stick the end of a skewer about 1/2-inch into the side of a flower. Stick the other end into the flower bed.

When all of your flowers are planted, return the melon balls to the flower bed and sprinkle the blueberries on top. You family will be amazed at your yummy watermelon creation!
