Long or Short?
By Jill Burrows
Art by Michael Palan
This activity supports simple measurement skills, using drinking straws cut into various lengths.

You Will Need:

  • 4 drinking straws

  • Safety scissors

  • Small plastic storage bag

What to Do

  1. Help your child cut each straw into three pieces of different lengths. You will have 12 pieces. Make sure no two are the same length.

  2. Have your child arrange the straws in order from the shortest to the longest.

  3. Mix up the straws. Now have your child arrange them in order from the longest to the shortest. Store the cut pieces in the plastic bag.

Variations

  • Twigs or cut paper strips of various lengths may be used instead of straws.

Enrichment

  • Children may use a ruler to measure each of the straws to the nearest inch or centimeter.
