Long or Short?
By Jill Burrows
Art by Michael Palan
This activity supports simple measurement skills, using drinking straws cut into various lengths.
You Will Need:
- 4 drinking straws
- Safety scissors
- Small plastic storage bag
What to Do
- Help your child cut each straw into three pieces of different lengths. You will have 12 pieces. Make sure no two are the same length.
- Have your child arrange the straws in order from the shortest to the longest.
- Mix up the straws. Now have your child arrange them in order from the longest to the shortest. Store the cut pieces in the plastic bag.
Variations
- Twigs or cut paper strips of various lengths may be used instead of straws.
Enrichment
- Children may use a ruler to measure each of the straws to the nearest inch or centimeter.
