Defibrillator on Duty
The Neighborhood Heart Watch (NHW) program is gaining momentum in Indianapolis and other areas of the country. A new NHW chapter in the Indianapolis community of Holcomb Estates features an automated external defibrillator (AED) placed in a secure gatehouse.

Saving Lives in Pittsburgh
The city of Pittsburgh joins the list of major cities in which community AED programs are in place. Motivated by the knowledge that technology exists to save many more lives, a coalition of local healthcare, government, and community agencies is developing strategies to improve access to AEDs in Pittsburgh and its 88 surrounding communities.

AEDs: No Experience Required
A new study, sponsored by the city of Chicago, helps confirm that people with no special training can use AEDs to save lives.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest--Not A Heart Attack
Media reports often refer to people dying from a "massive heart attack." Chances are, however, the person was a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. A heart attack can trigger sudden cardiac arrest, but they are not the same.

New Laws Protect AED Users
All fifty states have enacted defibrillator laws or adopted regulations, and many have expanded their good Samaritan acts to include the use of AEDs. Most of the bills enacted in the past three years allow any person to use an AED "for the purpose of saving the life of another person in cardiac arrest."

Motorcycles Equipped With AEDs
Specially designed motorcycles may soon help save lives in Miami, Florida. Under a proposed program, firefighters could respond to emergencies on the motorcycles, navigating gridlocked traffic to reach victims before other emergency vehicles arrive. All Miami-Dade County firefighters are trained as emergency medical technicians.

Overweight Americans Face Serious Health Risks
Nearly everyone knows that more Americans are overweight than ever before. And research data show that obesity, especially in children and teens, is not just about appearance--it plays a key role in the early development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Help For Heart Failure
Revised guidelines crafted by cardiology experts outline important new uses for implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)--sophisticated devices which stimulate the heart to beat with a steady rhythm and deliver an electrical shock if the heart's rhythm becomes dangerously fast or erratic.

Nuts: Tasty and Heart Healthy
A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that individuals who consumed nuts two or more times a week experienced a significant decrease in sudden cardiac death. For the study, over 21,000 male participants enrolled in the U.S. Physicians Health Study were prospectively followed for an average of 17 years.
