NHW Poster Girl Linda Isner
We waited almost a year and a half after her husband's sudden cardiac arrest to ask Linda Isner if she would be our Poster Girl to raise awareness for the Neighborhood Heart Watch.

Home AED Study
A new study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and Philips Medical Systems will provide valuable insight into whether an AED in the home will help heart attack survivors live longer and more productive lives. The Home Use AED Trial (HAT) is recruiting 7,000 people with a history of myocardial infarction who are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

Diabetes: Omega-3s for the Healthy Heart
Once again, research published in a recent issue of the journal Circulation highlights the importance of consuming fish and omega-3 fatty acids in preserving cardiovascular health. Among the more than 5,000 women with type 2 diabetes enrolled in the ongoing Nurses' Health Study, researchers found that women who ate fish once per week were 40 percent less likely to develop heart disease than women who rarely ate fish.

CorRestore for Congestive Heart Failure
Jerry Westling used to get winded walking up a flight of stairs. Now, thanks to a new surgical procedure using a patch made from cow heart tissue, the 56-year-old man is helping build a concession stand for an Oregon high-school baseball team.

Flu Shots Are Good Medicine
In spring 2002, NHW reported on preliminary research data linking flu shots to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and invited readers to complete the accompanying Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention surveys. Now new research helps confirm the vaccine's protective benefit.

Understanding Aging Arteries
During the last several years, evidence has been accumulating that most vascular disease--arteriosclerosis in particular--is an inflammatory process. In arteriosclerosis--a condition often referred to as "hardening of the arteries"--arteries of the cardiovascular system tend to thicken and become stiff, leading to a dramatic increase in one's risk of heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.
